The Macallan Distillery. The world’s most iconic single malt Scotch?
The Macallan needs little introduction. It joins both Glenfiddich and Glenlivet as one of the world’s three highest-selling single malt Scotch whiskies. The Macallan has always been a record breaker – in October 2019, one bottle of Macallan 1926 sold at Sotheby’s for £1.5 million. A second Macallan 1926 sold for £2.1 million.
From single malt Scotch to global luxury brand.
Now iconic on a worldwide scale, Macallan’s journey began with humbler beginnings. The distillery was founded by barley farmer, and schoolteacher, Alexander Reid. His 1824 licensing was among the first on Speyside – meaning Macallan was one of the first legally licensed distilleries in Scotland.
Unlike many whiskies of its time, Macallan continued to operate, despite two World Wars, prohibition in the United States, and a global economic downturn.
A wide range of Macallan rarities.
In the 1930s, Macallan began to age its whiskies for extended periods, most notably its 12-Year-old. In 2002, the Macallan Fine & Rare Collection was released – a range of rare, aged, and highly sought after whiskies from the distillery’s archives.
Macallan, now with Edrington, expanded on an epic scale. The distillery was fully modernised in the 2000s.
In July 2019, a £140 million new distillery and visitor experience was opened. And of course, it made the shortlist for the Stirling Prize for excellence in architecture.
