2024: A Year of Whisky Bicentennials

Six 200-year-old whiskies.

With age comes wisdom and experience. So, join us on a journey back to when whisky distilleries – from the would-be illegal to the soon-to-be elite – became lawfully licensed and regulated.

Whisky’s 52-page ‘Excise Act’ was introduced in 1823 (although unregulated whisky dates back much further). It detailed the mandatory setup and legal directive of a whisky distillery; its aim was to create a level playing field for distillers, generate income for Scotland’s overworked and underpaid grain farmers, and ultimately ensure a steady supply of consistent, quality Scotch. Before 1823, there was simply no protocol that set any standard.

2024 is a milestone for a myriad of whisky distilleries celebrating two hundred years of production. A whisky bicentennial that comprises The Glenlivet, The Macallan, Fettercairn, Miltonduff, Cardhu and Balmenach – all legally founded in 1824. Let London Cask Traders share and showcase this collection of six supremely sought-after brands – six of the finest, most famed, and renowned the world has ever experienced.

The Glenlivet

The Glenlivet has led the way in making superior-quality malts in Scotland’s southern Speyside region for 200 years; it is a must for any committed whisky cask collector. To celebrate the distillery’s bicentenary, the Chivas Brothers-owned whisky launched its oldest ever single malt Scotch – The Glenlivet, ‘has released the ‘Eternal Collection’, First Edition 55-year-old, in collaboration with computational architect Michael Hansmeyer.’ thespiritsbusiness.com

The Macallan

Arguably, the world’s foremost single malt Scotch whisky – the supremely complex yet distinctly delicate Macallan embraces 200 years of heritage with TIME : SPACE. ‘This extraordinary release features an exceptionally rare 1940 vintage, bottled in 2024. Matured for over eight decades, at 84 years old it is the oldest whisky ever released by The Macallan.’ Invest in Scotland’s No1 single malt whisky.

Fettercairn

To commemorate its bicentennial year, Whyte & Mackay-owned distillery, Fettercairn, has handcrafted a collection of six exceptionally rare single malts, and only ten sets of the collection are available – ‘a compendium of six of our rarest whiskies housed in a beautiful bespoke cabinet… The cabinet houses six of our rarest expressions, from our oldest ever expression at 60 years old to our youngest at just three. Each bottle, an exploration of flavour-led whisky making and a marker of a key date in the distillery’s history.’

Miltonduff

Situated in the north of Speyside, lies the magnificent Miltonduff Distillery. It may be a relatively unknown distillery in one of Scotland’s most whisky-rich regions, yet surprisingly, it is the second largest whisky distillery in the Chivas group. Like Glenlivet, it is owned by Pernod Ricard, ‘but unlike its illustrious stablemate there have been no announced plans to celebrate Miltonduff’s 200th year.’

Don’t let the lack of Miltonduff’s milestone celebrations put you off, rather, use its rarity as a valued trait. This superlative Speysider offers two distinct cask strengths – the first embraces rich spice and dark honey notes, while the second boasts a lighter, floral flavour.

Cardhu

Four distinct whiskies go into the making of Johnnie Walker. The smoky notes of Caol Isla hail from Islay; Clyneish from the Scottish Highlands; Glenkinchie, the Lowlands; and at its heart, Cardhu, the markedly aromatic Speysider. In the early nineteenth century, Cardhu was illicitly distilled by two of whisky’s most innovative women founders. ‘Cardhu is forever entangled with the stories of two of the sharpest, most inventive and strong-willed women in Scotland's early whisky narrative: Helen and Elizabeth Cumming.’

To mark its 200th anniversary, the distillery launched a limited edition 12-year-old single malt to celebrate its bicentennial year for International Women’s Day (8 March).

Balmenach

Located in the heart of Speyside’s whisky country, lies Balmenach, one of the world’s oldest functioning distilleries. The distillery is one of the industry’s most sustainable – and recently enjoyed a £4million upgrade. It may not (yet) be offering commemorative trimmings for cask investors, but Balmenach’s £4million single malt project, coincides with its bicentennial year, and boasts the ‘biggest investment in sustainable whisky production to date.’
