Visiting the warehouse, meeting the people who care for your whisky, and tasting directly from the cask is a powerful and memorable part of whisky cask ownership. It’s the tangible moment when your investment becomes more than simply numbers on a page – it transforms from a flavour into a lasting memory, and a part of Scotland’s heritage in your hands. How cask sampling works and who does it What to expect during a warehouse visit Understanding HMRC bonded regulations How ABV, angels’ share and regauging affect value Why nothing compares to sampling direct from a cask The Magic of Cask Whisky Sampling There’s something deeply personal and rewarding about tasting whisky straight from your own maturing cask. For cask whisky investors, sampling isn’t just about savouring the taste – it’s a key part of understanding how your asset is evolving. With London Cask Traders, you don’t just own a cask – you’re invited into the full journey of maturation, right down to pulling your own dram from a living, breathing cask stored within a bonded Scottish warehouse. Step-by-Step: How to Sample Your Whisky in the Warehouse 1. Arrange a Warehouse Visit through London Cask Traders We ensure all the casks belonging to our clients, are stored in HMRC-bonded warehouses. These are secure facilities approved by UK customs, where duty and VAT are deferred until the whisky is bottled or removed from bond. Contact your account manager at London Cask Traders London Cask Traders schedule your visit directly with the warehouse You will be advised of available dates, location details and protocols Note: Visits to any bonded warehouse are strictly by appointment only, and come under compliance regulations. 2. Understanding the Role of the Warehouseman It’s important to note that sampling is always carried out by a qualified warehouseman, never by visitors themselves, and there are good reasons for this: Warehousemen are trained to re-gauge the cask (measure its contents and ABV) They draw the samples safely and legally, with no contamination They guard against any evaporation beyond the angels’ share This is not just protocol – it’s a matter of preserving the integrity of your investment and complying with HMRC rules. Warehousemen are fully qualified, and the custodians of your whisky’s integrity – trained, trusted and central to the process. 3. When are You Allowed to Sample? Sampling typically happens: After the first 3 years (minimum for Scotch whisky maturity) Every 1-2 years thereafter, depending on your investment plan Before making decisions on bottling, selling or re-racking You may not be able to sample: If the cask is less than 3 years old (recommended at least 4 years old) If HMRC restrictions are in place (eg: audits or security alerts) During warehouse maintenance periods If the cask is in a remote warehouse that doesn’t permit visitors 4. What Happens During Sampling A sample isn’t just poured and handed over – it’s carefully drawn and analysed. Sampling isn’t casual; it’s methodical. Here’s what you can expect: Preparation: the warehouse team gathers sterile tools (bung puller, whisky thief, glassware) Inspection: the wooden cask is checked for integrity before extraction Extraction: using a traditional ‘whisky thief’ – like a large oversized straw, usually made of copper – the sample is carefully extracted Each time your cask is sampled, a few key tests take place: ABV (Alcohol by Volume) – cask strength can range from 40-65% Volume Measurement – how much liquid is left; helps determine yield potential Colour & Clarity – indicates early signs of maturity or need for finishing Aroma & Taste – reviewed on-site and noted for your records You’ll receive a detailed gauging report, and your sample can be bottled into a small glass vial to take away or sent to you. What to Look for in a Cask Sample Sampling isn’t just about enjoying a taste – it’s a moment to assess: Cask Strength and Fumes Whisky straight from the cask can reach up to 65% ABV – significantly higher than typical bottled strength. Use a tulip-shaped whisky sampling glass Approach the glass gently – no deep inhaling Add a few drops of water to unlock hidden notes Does It Need Finishing? Sometimes a whisky can benefit from further maturation in a different cask: Sherry, port or wine casks can enhance complexity This process, called re-racking, can increase cask value Independent bottlers often ‘finish’ whisky in their signature style Should you filter, or add water? You may choose to reduce the ABV before bottling Some cask whiskies benefit from cold filtration Others should remain untouched for full cask strength bottling These decisions are all part of your cask strategy – re-racking and finishing, cold filtration or no filtration, are all tools to enhance the whisky’s value and appeal. Sampling direct from your cask can help guide these investment goals. Can’t Visit?
