Three pot stills – one wash, two spirit

For almost two centuries, Annandale Distillery has retained much of its original shape and well-preserved warehouse. The site has always looked striking, sitting in contrast to the surrounding rolling green hills and valleys of Dumfries and Galloway.
Founded in 1836, it was bought in 1893 by Johnnie Walker (known modestly back then as John Walker & Sons – John Walker started out as a Kilmarnock grocer). Arguably, the world’s most famous whisky brand, JW had purchased two distilleries that year, Cardhu and Annandale. Yet, sadly due to complications with the First World War, Annandale wasn’t to remain in JW’s hands for long.
In 1924, the distillery was leased to the Robinson family, who were farmers. Up until 2007, they used the site’s kiln and mash house for producing their renowned provost porridge oats, while the warehouse housed their cattle.
The Annandale Distillery has seen three generations pass through its hardy, hospitable doors. And in 2007, Annandale Distillery was bought by Prof David Thomson and Teresa Church. In 2008, the company received a grant of £150,000 from the Regional Selective Assistance (RSA) support as part of a £10.5m investment.
Why not try the famed Man O’Sword selection? These smoky, peated single malts are a true depiction of Annandale’s magnificent collection of whiskies.
