Not so long ago, in Banffshire, Speyside, slightly south of the Scottish Highlands, the Auchroisk Distillery was built. Its purpose? To provide additional malt production to go into the world-renowned J&B (Justerini & Brooks) blended whisky. The name of the distillery, Auchroisk, means shallow stream in Gaelic; it refers to the nearby Mulben Burn – the burn’s freshwater is used for production.
Auchroisk Distillery was constructed in 1972. Whisky production began in 1974. The first single malt was made in 1978.
That first single malt was branded ‘The Singleton’ in 1986. Understandably, ‘Auchroisk’ was deemed too difficult for foreign customers to pronounce.
Then… in 2001 the name changed from Singleton back to Auchroisk, as a bottling was released under the name ‘Auchroisk 10 Year Old Flora & Fauna’ in the Diageo Flora & Fauna range. In 2008 the name was changed again, this time to ‘The Singleton of Auchroisk’. No more name changes were made. Not yet.
To this day, the whisky distillery is primarily used as a hub for vatting Auchroisk. It is bottled from time to time as part of Diageo’s annual special release range. However, it is not commercially available as a single malt for consumers. At least, not often. That’s why you should get in touch and get your very own.
