Rather than beginning with Aultmore, let’s start with one of Scotch Whisky’s key players. Alexander Edward. A true whisky aficionado, Edward had his finger in many whisky pies, including ownership of Benrinnes Distillery, before owning Aultmore Distillery. Edwards founded the distillery in 1895.

Prior to the turn of the century, the distillery went into downfall when the new owners, the Pattisons, faced bankruptcy. It was 1899, and the distillery’s dilemma looked dim – production plummeted and Aultmore closed its doors. But not for long.

It reopened a few years later. Before closing. Again.

This closure was due to barley shortages, which were rationed in place of flour during the First World War. John Dewar & Sons owned it for a short while, until it was bought by Scottish Malt Distillers in 1930.

In 1970, the distillery was modernised. It was sold back to whisky stalwarts, Dewar’s, in 1998. Dewar’s, now a subsidiary of Bacardi, created a 1998 official bottling that was released in 2004. The 12-year-old, is light, elegant and fruity. Apples, pears, and other fruits, along with a touch of spice is commonly mentioned in tasting notes.

After all those years of ups and downs – it finally felt that the distillery was performing with precision. It now owns a series of casks any whisky portfolio would be envious of.
