Four pot stills – two wash, two spirit

In the whisky-rich countryside of northern Speyside, lies BenRiach – a distillery that crafts multi-award-winning whisky. Three styles of distilled spirit are on offer: classic, peated or triple distilled. But to appreciate how this once wonderfully unlucky whisky came about, we need to go back to the distillery’s inception in 1898.
BenRiach Distillery was founded by John Duff in 1898. Months later, the world of whisky would be battered by the Pattison Crash. The Crash was caused by the Pattison brothers’ illicit business practices, which included fraud and embezzlement. Whisky production in general suffered, the brothers were eventually jailed, and sadly BenRiach closed its doors.
The distillery lay dormant until 1965; it was restored and modernised by Glenlivet Distillers Ltd. They worked around-the-clock to keep the same period features and character of the original distillery. Following the makeover, the stills of Benriach roared into life once again.
In 1978, BenRiach Distillery was bought by Seagrams, and became part of Pernod Ricard in 2001. Yet, more closures followed.
Finally, in 2004, a consortium of investors bought it; and a huge amount of money was invested. Today, it is owned by Brown-Forman, who visualised its vast potential; they purchased it for almost £300 million for it in 2016.
