Four pot stills – two wash, two spirit

The rugged, windswept Isle of Islay is known for its heavily peated, smoky whiskies. One side of Bruichladdich is just a wee bit different – atypical of Scotland’s undisputed, peaty whisky island paradise.
Bruichladdich can be perfectly suited for those who don’t favour too much smokiness. The distillery mainly offers an extensive range of whiskies without a peaty finish, such as their signature bottling, the ‘The Classic Laddie’ which is delicate, floral and elegant.
But of course, there is a heavily peated side to this dram. It is Islay after all. The unique ‘Octomore’ malt series is famed as ‘the most heavily peated single malt whisky range in the world’.
The diverse Bruichladdich distillery was built in 1881 on the westernmost part of the island, by the shore of Loch Indaal, on the Rinns of Islay.
Like most Scotch distilleries, owners, directors and investors have come and gone at Bruichladdich.
Then in 2012, the iconic, Remy Cointreau acquired the company for £58million. By 2023, Bruichladdich ranked fourth in a Cask Connoisseur ranking of the world’s most distinguished distilleries.
All the distillery’s barley comes exclusively from the windswept isle, some of which has been grown on the island since 2004. The provenance of the barley used is vital to the Islay-born and bred ethics of the brand.
