For such a large distillery, Bunnahabhain is neatly tucked away on the northeast shores of Islay. It’s about as far off the beaten track as can be – with stunning views of the Paps of Jura across the Sound of Islay. This peaceful place on Islay boasts little to no civilisation, aside from Bunnahabhain’s staff, and the occasional holidaymaker in the area’s old miner’s homes.

The striking whitewash distillery dominates the serene locale. The giant stills inside the stillhouse are equally impressive, as is the distillery’s huge Victorian warehouse – Warehouse No.9 – which is more active than ever.

Bunnahabhain is not a typically peated Islay whisky. Rather, it offers a softer, fruiter palate, with a nutty, sherried quality leading among vanilla, marmalade, and raisins.

Distell International own today’s Bunnahabhain Distillery, having purchased it in 2017. It is as active as ever and there are even plans to give the Victorian warehousing a huge £10 million+ makeover. Better still, the inviting visitor’s centre will also enjoy a sizeable upgrade.

The distillery is always welcoming. And tours of Bunnahabhain Distillery can be easily arranged through the Bunnahabhain site.

If you have a fascination for Islay whisky, but are not too keen on a peaty, smoky taste, then Bunnahabhain quite literally goes against the grain.
