Four pot stills – two wash, two spirit

Craigellachie is a sleepy town, with a handsome distillery in Banffshire, at the heart of Speyside’s ‘Whisky Country’. The name Craigellachie translates as rocky cliff – referring to the cliff that overlooks the adjacent River Spey. Craigellachie was founded by a group of blenders, led by Alexander Edward, at the height of the whisky boom in 1891.
The distillery was incorporated as a limited company and benefitted from a massive makeover by the new partnership of Craigellachie and Glenlivet Distillery Ltd in 1896.
Yet again, like so many whisky distilleries of the time, it changed hands several times. So when would Craigellachie Distillery settle down with a more informed investor/owner?
Scottish Malt Distillers (SMD), along with their parent company, Bacardi, shaped a full-scale renovation of the distillery between 1964-65, doubling the number of pot stills. John Dewar & Sons, and Bacardi, took the reins in 1998. JD&S and Bacardi continue to keep the distillery alive and very active today.
In 2014, the owners produced the famed 13-year-old, 17-year-old, 19-year-old and a limited edition 23-year-old. Today, Craigellachie produces over 4-million litres per year – and much of the spirit is used in blended whiskies. Happy days.
