Six pot stills – three wash, three spirit

There are many twists and turns to the Dailuaine story. A distillery that produces rich, sweet, and full-bodied single malts. A distillery that sits proudly in the scenic village of Carron, Speyside.
The Speysider is currently home to three wash stills, each with a capacity of 18,700 litres, and three spirit stills which each hold 20,500 litres. Huge; especially when sat next to Diageo’s vast portfolio of whiskies like Cardhu, Lagavulin or Talisker, to name a few.
Dailuaine was built by farmer William Mackenzie, in 1851/2. When he passed three years later, his widow leased the distillery to local banker, James Fleming. In 1884 Dailuaine was restored and enlarged. In 1891 it partnered with Glenlivet and Dailuaine-Glenlivet Distillery Ltd.
By the late 19th century, Dailuaine was the largest single malt Scotch distillery in Speyside, in terms of innovation at least. Yet only a short time later, in 1917, a fire destroyed much of the site. The distillery closed. It was then bought by Distillers Company Limited (DCL), forerunners to United Distillers (UD). They soon renovated the site and four stills became six.
Things got even better in 1997 when United Distillers (UD), became one of the world’s largest whisky multinationals – Diageo. It remains with Diageo to this day.
Dailuaine is not open to the public. But if you’re interested in a small, hosted tour contact the distillery directly.
