Four pot stills – two wash, two spirit

The distillery’s ideal location was chosen by John & Alexander Manson in 1797 (yet evidence says that distillation was happening as far back as 1785). Glen Garioch Distillery sits proudly within Oldmeldrum, Aberdeenshire, the market village that is home to this ancient distillery – one of oldest distilleries in Scotland that is still in operation. Many say it is the oldest. This is debatable, as the still operational Glenturret Distillery in Crieff was established in 1763.
Oldmeldrum is renowned for its plentiful barley and Glen Garioch continued to malt its own barley long after others in Scotland had ceased the practice. The distillery had many ups and downs over the years. It’s main problem in the early days and throughout much of the 20th century, was its lack of a freshwater source.
Fast forward to 1968, and the production of Glen Garioch was suspended on account of ‘chronic water shortages’.
Times were about to get more prosperous in the early 1970s, as a new manager, Stanley P. Morrison – of Morrison Bowmore – bought the distillery in 1970. He importantly discovered ‘The Silent Spring’ in a neighbouring farm. Thanks to this essential plentiful water source Glen Garioch, still operates today – and thanks to Morrison Bowmore it is more innovative and productive than ever.
