Overlooking the tranquil banks of the river Lossie in Elgin, Moray, lies the renovated Glen Moray Distillery. Originally a brewery, the reconditioned site began its single malt Scotch production in 1897.

In its early days, the distillery was a mess, inside and out. It was dilapidated and downtrodden, and simply lacked general TLC. Once a brewery, it was converted to a two still distillery. The change to distillery was premature. Little care was taken to get it in shape, and unsurprisingly, it closed.

Following a fire – the distillery was closed in 1910. Thirteen long years pass. The MacDonald and Muir family – owners of Glenmorangie – bought the distillery in 1923. And in 1924 distillation resumed; they release a single malt Scotch. Two additional stills were added in 1958.

The single malt Scotch was released in 1976 but was only promoted from the 1990s. Macdonald & Muir experimented with wood-finishing – also now a familiar feature of Glenmorangie. In 2004, the French luxury goods group Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy, bought the distillery, only to sell it again.

Today, Glen Moray continues to operate, producing almost 3.5 million litres a year. Its current owners are La Martiniquaise, France’s second largest spirits group. Glen Moray’s luck had turned around.
