Founded in 1897, the distillery was designed by John Alcock, while overseen by Charles Doig & Son. A prominent distillery, just outside Keith in Speyside, which was quickly snapped up and founded by James Buchanan Co. Ltd. that same year, 1897.
Production commenced when James Buchanan Co. Ltd. and three interested investors of Glentauchers got together – the James Buchanan Company Limited team was born. Successful years followed, and Glentauchers Distillery kept ticking along nicely.
Better still, the distillery was about to go from local to international acclaim. In 1925 James Buchanan Co. Ltd joined The Distillers Company.
The Distillers Company was renamed United Distillers in 1987 (UD, the precursor to Diageo in 2002).
United Distillers parted with the distillery in 1985, while keeping it operational, and sold it to Allied Distillers in 1989.
Today, Pernod Ricard owns the distillery. 4.5 million litres of pure alcohol is produced per year, with most of the spirit being used in blended whiskies.
A semi-official bottling was released by Gordon & MacPhail in the 1990s. There was one official release of a 15-year old distillery own bottling in 2017 but only a handful of releases through independent bottlers such as Gordon & McPhail or Berry Brothers & Rudd were made available.
Glentauchers Distillery remains fully active to this day.
