Located in the Gorbals area of the city, on the southern banks of the River Clyde, lies Strathclyde Distillery. An unlikely place to house a whisky distillery. Yet Strathclyde makes a veritable grain Scotch – although rarely.
It’s fair to say the distillery looks more industrial than the picturesque whisky production sites you’ll find in Scotland’s Highlands and Islands. The giant grey box of a place looks more like an assembly plant. At least its water source comes from picturesque Loch Katrine in the stunning Trossachs region of Scotland.
Every year, the distillery churns out close to 40 million litres of spirit – which, is nearly twice as much as Glenlivet and Glenfiddich combined. And every drop of alcohol contributes to blended Scotch brands such as Chivas Regal, Ballantine’s and Royal Salute.
The distillery stands on the site of an old cotton mill. It was built and founded in 1927 by London distiller Seager Evans and Co. And its initial use was mainly to supply neutral grain spirit for its gins.
Today the distillery can produce around 40 million litres of whisky a year. And it’s not at all bad when it’s not in a blend. It’s actually quite delicious; an incredibly smooth grain whisky with notes of buttery toffee, caramel, vanilla, and coconut. It may surprise you.
