Teaninich Distillery. Epic in beauty, and whisky production.
A distillery with such epic, picturesque views. A distillery that’s as charming on the inside as it is on the outside. Teaninich Distillery and its Allness location, in the Scottish Highlands, is a striking home for Scotch.
Founded by a ‘blind captain’ in 1817.
Captain Hugh Munro (who was shot in battle in 1794 and blinded in both eyes) built the distillery, which sits proudly on his estate, in the shadow of Teaninich Castle.
By 1830, Teaninich was producing 30 times more spirit than it when it opened. It’s a beast when it comes to producing whisky, despite an initial lack of barley – due to the high demand from the area’s illegal distilleries.
The distillery continued to change hands – whisky aficionado Robert Pattison rented Teaninich from the Munro family in 1850; it was passed on again before being bought by The Distillers Company (now Diageo). It stays with Diageo to this day – who even built a second distillery in 2013, doubling the number of stills.

Today’s ‘two’ distilleries predominantly produce malts for blending, particularly in Johnnie Walker Red Label. Diageo’s 12-year-old Flora and Fauna series of whiskies are about the only way to sample the single malt.
The style of whisky at Teaninich is distinct as it uses a ‘mash filter’, rather than a ‘mash tun’ – only two distilleries in Scotland use this speedier production technique.
